It all started in 2016, when Sylvain Boisjoly, born in Montreal in 1964, discovered painting. He joined the Atelier du geste gallery in Montreal where he learned to express his art, free of any constraint. This greatly contrasts with his day job in information technology, and was a welcome outlet for him. After months of abstract art exploration, Sylvain joined the M Galerie, where he developed a great interest in monochrome work. He began painting using abstract and naive art, then after developing skill with gauche and acrylics on canvas, he began to explore figurative art. His work has developed into figurative in genre, with touches of abstraction and surrealism.

Guided by impulse, Boisjoly translates his feelings onto canvas. His art is exploratory; sometimes naive, sometimes abstract, sometimes figurative. He paints as an act of self-liberation and expression. As his emotions change, so do his tone and style. When he needs to release negative emotions, his work is dark and tormented; when he is happy, his work is light and airy, with tints of joyful hues. His work often reflects his environment as well, showcasing both his physical surroundings, which include nature and scenes of domestic life, as well as his social environment, which feature themes of social injustice and inequality.

In the artist’s own words, “My art comes from my heart, and my goal is for it to touch the hearts of others.”
