The sea, a deep blue, almost black, leaps out from the background amongst a littering of bags, towels and beach accessories in Emily Bertucci’s Sunday. Swimsuited humans graze like livestock across the plane of the canvas in the bucolic beach scene. Smudged faces, their belongings strewn about, Bertucci’s subjects plant themselves along the sand against a flat and ominous ocean, the sky above contrasting in a cheery blue. The shadowing in her images are done in variants of blue which cast her figures in an oceanic glow. Working with oil on canvas, Bertucci is inspired by the quotidien and the beauty in the mundane.

Bertucci lives and works in Oceanside, California.
