Carly Zavala is a self-taught photographer from Venezuela based in Brooklyn, NY. Zavala began to shoot intimately introspective self-portraits during the pandemic, due to the scarcity of subjects. This taught her how to best stage her pictures and utilize light in an unconventional way. Zavala’s sitters appear blurry, hidden behind a veil of fog. Shrouded in an aura of mystery, their traits almost imperceptible to the naked eye, they nevertheless reveal their most authentic selves. Zavala’s background as a nurse helped her empathize with and relate to her fellow humans. In her portraiture, she brings out their vulnerability with compassion and grace.
