The paintings of Gordon Hunt are polished meditation in light and color. Often anchoring his studies in the subject of boats, viewers are taken in by the almost pointillist technique with which he renders his chosen subject-matter. In Sail Away, for example, one notes how Hunt paints in such a way that the luminosity of light reflected in water becomes the most salient theme. This painting of sparkling reflections and a distant silhouette also incorporates strong contrasting colors and dynamic shapes. These flashes of contrasting colors resonate throughout Gordon’s oeuvre. In his own words, this kind of contrast generates what he terms “visual energy and excitement.”

Influenced by beach scenes suggestive of holidays and a relaxed sense of well-being, Hunt’s work is equally influence by graphic design. In fact, it’s this graphic design aspect that gives his pointillistic pictures their alluringly universal character. Even when a boat seems obscured by shadow, or too far in the distance to actually see, there’s nonetheless a sensation of symmetry embedded in the work. This sense of balanced harmoniousness is not imposed from without, but relates to the subject-matter Hunt has chosen to work with: often, an examination of the poetic reciprocity between sea and sky.
