Iduna Imiela imagines it something like her Hummingbird Heartbeat pictorializes: an expanding staccato rhythm of pinks and grays racing across the square canvas. When asked what inspires her, Imiela references culture – in this instance, a Katy Perry song – but also the natural world and literature. A bit of whimsy flavors Imiela’s canvases, an innocence perhaps captured from her previous occupation as a children’s book illustrator. Her abstracts as well as her landscapes have an innocence; unfiltered and unfettered the pieces play and shout like children in a schoolyard. #autumncolors (II) is dappled in space becoming sculpture-like in its dimensionality. The image created gives a sense of gazing into a puddle, the colors reflecting what might be foliage against a blue sky in muted greens and pinks. To get this specific texture, Imiela was experimenting with a household product, Spachtelmasse, or in English, spackle; Imiela is always discovering and exploring new ways to create. As pale blue as the daytime sky is in #autumncolors (II), Imiela can often be found looking toward the night sky holding her sense of awe and wonder which she translates onto the canvas.
Imiela was born in Berlin and currently resides in Hochdorf near Stuttgart.
