Israel Feldmann works in terms of his own visual idiom. Less idiosyncratic than universally intelligible, Feldmann’s usage of raw pigment and other natural materials enables him to create textured frames that look like organic phenomena in their own right. Allowing the materiality of paint to guide him through the process of developing a work, he has a penchant for concealing any and all traces of the artist’s hand. Instead, it seems as if his works were birthed into existence, weighted with the absurd contingency that characterizes an object in the world.

Burning Wind explores ideas of creation, existence and personal reflection. It showcases rich browns, fiery yellow, and a diaphanous wash of blue evolving into an organic form that resembles a desert. The mineral aspect of the work alludes to the transience of existence as well as creation, while the layered appearance of the piece suggests the storied structuration of the human psyche. The viewer’s eye traces the outlines of the layers like a rhythmic movement, experiencing the pigments that compose the work in an intensely personal yet accessible way.
