Nivedita Saha’s powerful depictions of mythology and sacred imagery are fierce weapons to reclaim the sovereignty of women. A multidisciplinary artist skilled in charcoal drawing, watercolor, and oil painting as well as printmaking, sculpture, and quilting, Saha taps into the wealth of myths and traditions of her native Indian culture and revisits old narratives in a contemporary key. As a girl she was deeply moved by a statue of a weeping Mother Mary in a Portuguese church. It was then that she understood the inherent seed of sacrifice every woman carries within her; the sacrifice of Eve who is forbidden from eating the fruit, the sacrifice of the Virgin Mother who sees her son meet his cruel faith, as well as her own personal stories of grief and loss. Every woman is a goddess, according to Saha, yet the image of a goddess transcends mere pleasing aesthetics and fantasies. It becomes a failing, vulnerable figure, who shows scars and imperfections proudly on her nude body as injuries of war. The divine spirit, God in female form, rises above the ashes teaching her children the tough lessons of life. Saha perceives her work as a mission to ignite positive change and restore reverence and appreciation for the role of women in society. After all, without them, nothing in this world would even exist.

Saha earned an MFA in Social Sculpture from Oxford Brookes University, in Oxford, UK. She exhibited widely in Dubai, the UK, and North America. Her work is part of collections in museums, universities, and institutions all over the world. A full-time artist, Saha lives and operates in her art atelier in Dubai, UAE.
