Akemi Fujita is a Japanese artist from the city of Yokohama. She studied oil painting at Tamagawa University in Japan, but shifted her artistic expression to driftwood in her practice. Inspired by notable artists working in similar media, such as Iwasaki Nagato, she uses her driftwood sculptures as expressive pieces inspired by the suffering she has experienced, which she feels is relevant to suffering humankind. In her words, “I think my artwork express today’s social and economic suffering. The limbs are twisted and stretched onto others, which represents how painfully twisted society and the world has become.”
Fujita has been involved in many solo and group exhibitions since 2002, and has won several awards in Japan. Most recently, she exhibited at the 103 rd Nika Exhibition in 2019.
