Madrid born artist Fiz Dominguez creates paintings that blur the boundaries of abstraction and figuration. He is particularly interested in portraiture, depicting his subjects with great sensitivity and feeling. Dominguez is a master of sfumato: the classical technique of allowing tones to shade gradually into one another in the manner later adopted by the likes of Auguste Renoir. But, although Dominguez’ technique does reveal classical training and ease, he is not a Classicist or Neo-Impressionist. The artist developed a style that is all his own, developed as the result of rigorous artistic practice and in accordance with his unique gift. The artist works with minimal means, using paint, values and brush strokes sparingly, to great effect.

Dominguez approaches his subject matter in a likewise minimal manner, often rendering certain aspects of faces, figures and scenes and leaving others blank. In paintings like Natalia this type of rendering suggests that the artist is painting from memory, or, perhaps, painting memory itself. The artist exhibits widely and is the recipient of several awards for artistic excellence.
