Anita Birkenfeld's unique sculptures walk the line between being thought-provoking and delivering a purely pleasurable visual experience. Birkenfeld examines the body: she depicts it striking iconic poses, torquing and folding in on itself, and at rest. Her figures often lack limbs or heads, allowing her to zero in on the inherently sculptural qualities of certain body parts. Birkenfeld also studies the way clothing is inhabited by and informs, in equal measure, the human figure. She sculpts empty garments that seem to hang on invisible people. This interrogation of materiality, and the transference of soft fabric into hard bronze, is at the heart of Birkenfeld's artistic practice. She sets lines in clay as she works - what is a momentary wrinkle in the real world is committed to eternity in her sculpture. Each ridge is a document of her line of sight and her thought process at the time. Her works are sensitively realized and faithful to the quirks of real-life garments. Birkenfeld was born in Poland and today lives and works in Israel.
