Sheila Smith’s work finds beauty in the strangest places. Inspired by the aleatory melding of plastic bottles and aluminum cans—trash items, to be sure—Smith has sublimated these objects to the status of art via mixed-media photography. Starting with an actual photo, she then alters it digitally. Colors and contrasts are intensified; shapes and textures, along with the tracings of advertisement lettering still visible on the surface of these discarded objects, take on an almost numinous quality. The fact that each photo has been mounted onto canvas only adds to this impression.
