Iraqi artist Muhanned al Badrawy’s creative practice is founded on the importance of revealing the spiritual self.  Influenced by the arts of ancient Islamic civilization, along with European Renaissance art, al Badrawy transforms and strips the identity of the Arabic character from the classical to the modern; through abstraction and the creation of new forms, a narrative is developed focusing on what is spiritual and what is absolute.  He distinguishes himself from, ‘traditional,” Arabic calligraphy by employing abstract Arabic characters as symbolic elements in the expression of composition and modernity, along with displays of distinct color values.

The social, political, and cultural issues of his homeland inform and motivate the formulation of his artistic work; born in onerous and unstable conditions, al Badrawy’s work is a sharp contrast, instead focusing on the more colorful and charisma of the artist’s spirit.   Each work challenges his ability to mingle his creative spirit with the unrelenting crisis of his home’s deterioration due to terror through extremism; to discover and capture beauty in the midst of fear and instability.
