He Chungqing’s works are informed by theology as much as by social conditions in his native homeland of China. In The Passover, for instance, a mass of persons are seen casually seated across from a depiction of Christ’s crucifixion. Chungqing’s work is intended to express, from the perspective of faith, how Chinese people are by and large indifferent to the teachings of the gospel. The officialdom of China’s government having long suppressed Christianity, it’s almost impossible for ordinary citizens to become authentically religious. Thus, the image shows a group of persons artificially separated from God.
