Jennifer Day specializes in large, monochromatic depictions of water and forestry. In Storied Sea, the use of grayscale lends the image a double-meaning. On the one hand, “storied” suggests history — the sea being an ancient site where countless narratives have transpired. On the other hand, the menacing aspect of the waters and the height of the waves invoke “storied” water quite literally. The grayscale palette of the paintings gives the select area of the sea that it depicts a monumental quality, which works for either interpretation.
