"In response to the pandemic shutdown, Mihaly created a “quarantine studio” on her bedroom dresser top where she fashioned fantasy scenarios using small plastic figures and mundane items. While lighthearted, Mihaly’s photographs often include personal touches that use objects and ephemera from her late mother.
After graduate school in San Francisco Mihaly moved to New York City where she taught photography and worked as a photo editor and researcher at various magazines including Entertainment Weekly, Vanity Fair and Budget Living. It wasn’t, however, until she moved to the Hudson River Valley to help care for her mother that Julie was able to return to photography as a full-time pursuit."
