The landscape paintings of Johanna Wray balance serenity with bold color, capturing moments in the artist’s travels and life. These calming compositions draw viewers into her world. Wray preps her canvases with a layer of vibrant, red-orange ground, giving her work a sense of depth and animation. One might be able to spot this base layer peeking through the paint in some of her pieces. No matter the medium or style, she gravitates toward using vivid colors. In addition to landscapes, she enjoys creating mixed media collages with a focus on pop culture and aspects of movement and dance.
Wray was born in Holland but moved to Alberta at a young age, where she eventually studied art at the University of Calgary. She currently lives and works in Canada as an art educator.
