The impressionistic abstract paintings of Annette Balsgaard are deeply inspired by nature and all its varied aspects. Balsgaard, who lives in Denmark, is fascinated by the interplay of color, shape, and form in the natural world, and draws upon these elements in plants, trees, and the environment as a whole. Her favorite things in nature are imperfect–she believes that the imperfections and oddities are what make the world interesting, in both humans and animals. She also seeks to capture and convey the moods of nature: the dynamism of spring, the peacefulness of a meadow, or even the violence of a summer storm. Balsgaard prefers working with acrylics, and paints for hours at a time, layering pigments one on top of the other to create a rich textural landscape that radiates with energy.
