Storey’s color palette is primarily made up of luscious blues, greens, and magenta's replicating the hues found in land, sea and space. Storey's painting seeks to express the continuous evolutionary process – sometimes focusing on mankind as a fragment of the universe, seen as small figures integrating themselves within a vast, sometimes surreal landscape. Sometimes we see a closer focus, on individual roles, especially the ever-changing roles of women and the relationship between man and woman ( as in the biblical Adam and Eve to the modern relationship). Her paintings have a sensuous, sculptural feel (enhanced by the use of different media). Storey’s landscapes and figurative work, often of women, celebrate the individual power and collective strength within the vast universe. The painting reflects on aspects from Leonardo, Casper David Friedrich up to the modern Peter Doig. Figures are used to show that we are part of nature – in fact we ARE nature.
Storey’s studio in Germany is a place of experimental adventure; the layering of paint transforms into smooth and tactile surfaces. With unbridled strokes of her brush, both abstract and realistic forms emerge, a metamorphosis of media. Storey equates her creativity to a sped-up process of evolution. In this atmosphere of bold pictorial processes, Storey aims to make the connection between humankind and the global environment more apparent, creating a narrative union flourishing from the past to the present.
