Self-taught painter Eric Carter could be called a painters’ painter. Experimenting with many styles, he focuses on the painterly and technical aspects of the work, recognizing that while visual media can be created in many ways, what painting has that sets it apart is its surface tactility and presence, and as such allows the paint in many of his work to do what it does best: look like paint. In his abstract works you can see many of the brushstrokes and nuances on the surface of the canvas, and the soft yet bold, vivid colors seem to scream a celebration of painting in its purest form.

For Carter, each painting has a particular vision that he is attempting to realize in it, and the question of how painterly to make each work is a question for that work alone. Being that he is interested in experimenting with styles, many of his works cross boundaries and include abstract, painterly moves alongside realistically rendered objects such as bubbles, while other works are gorgeously, meticulously rendered still life or wildlife scenes with stunning accuracy and detail. Eric is a former board member of The Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center and a member of the Frederick County Art Association, The Artist Angle Frederick, MD and Washington County Arts Council. He is also Owner of Sun Gallery of Fine Art in Funkstown, MD.
