Modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe famously proclaimed, less is more. Embracing this minimalism construct, Spanish artist José Martín builds intimately scaled sculptures that make a big impact. Architecturally inspired, he juxtaposes cube-like patterns of rusted metal with organic forms of white ceramic that sensuously fold and melt into and over the structures.

Beauty is activated through seemingly simple dualities and unexpected dichotomies. Movement versus stillness, soft versus hard and industry versus nature are complex metaphors that give the viewer the opportunity to contemplate existence through the artist’s abstract spaces and materiality.
