InquireThe playful, whimsical paintings of Swedish artist Josefina Wendel Carlsson are surrealist visions of odd and enigmatic fairytales. Working in both oil on canvas and watercolor on paper, she creates richly detailed compositions in jewel-toned hues, incorporating a sense of eerie, dreamlike fantasy into her lush tableaus. Drawing from the legacy of Surrealism, Wendel Carlsson attempts to unleash the subconscious and allow the unbridled imagination to take flight.
In Moonlight Story, Wendel Carlsson presents a moody and indecipherable scene, the abandoned ball gown and handbag of the subject exist as a tense present absence. Meanwhile, House of Blue Light is a densely layered composition depicting an otherworldly suburban landscape with repetitive absurdity. Finally, Next Time Ladies renders a threatening pair of magenta stilettos amid a wild maze of plants and homes. In each of these diverse works, Wendel Carlsson blends everyday objects with the unhinged fantasy of a dream world.
