Bahraini artist Salwa Almoayyed’s work is a vivacious expedition into the realm of expressionism. Originally graduating from Cairo University as a Bachelor of Journalism, she discovered her joy of painting under the tutelage of Raquel Doran Klieg in 1983. Driven by a personal passion as well as encouragement from those around her who saw her talent, she worked her way through more realistic academic painting as well as motifs of impressionism.

Having by this point become comfortable with her control of light and color, as well as the immense freedom that she found in using a palette knife to apply paint to the canvas, Almoayyed began a shift toward more Abstract Expressionist tendencies in order to explore and communicate her inner world to viewers. Around this time, she also began to explore media outside of oil paints, experimenting with acrylic paints and collage, amongst other things. As a result, her current paintings are exceptionally lively, filled with movement and heavily impastoed color. Though leaning into the school of abstract expressionist techniques, she chooses to retain subject matter in some of her works, allowing the viewers something familiar to latch onto amidst the surface of Almoayyed’s evoked inner state. One of her paintings, which was bought by the Bahraini Ministry of Information during an exhibition there, currently hangs in the Bahraini National Museum.
