Svetlana Nelson’s vibrant landscape paintings unabashedly celebrate the beauty and tranquility of the natural world. Working in predominantly oil on canvas with brush, palette knife, and bare hands, Nelson colors her compositions with luminous hues and highly textured surfaces that imbue her works with a temperament that is at once jovial and hushed. In works such as The Mood (part 1) (2018), the viewer overlooks the water’s edge of a pond. Thick, wispy brushstrokes of deep magenta comprise the grasslands that surround the water’s right bank, their crystalline reflections rendered with bright shades of violet, blue, and green. A solitary pine cone peers curiously over the shoreline, its presence reminding the audience of the undisturbed grace within the natural world. Velveteen washes of light blues, pinks, and chartreuse compose a tranquil sky, kissed by faint mountain silhouettes in the background.
Inspired by abstract art, Nelson launched her painting career in April 2017, and within seven months of beginning her practice, she held her first solo graduate exhibition at Lowe Mill Arts and Entertainment Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The artist explains: “All my paintings are from my soul and mind. I have many ideas for future work. Art has changed me, and the earth has become more beautiful in my eyes.”
