アーティスト トム・スタール uses photography to document and share his experiences traveling the world. For Stahl, taking photos is about more than just capturing a particular moment in time. It’s about being present in the moment and increasing the chances that he’ll remember his experiences later on. His work reveals a fascination with man-made structures and the people that inhabit them. Gazing at the sides of buildings, Stahl focuses his lens on a limited section of the structure, facing the building straight-on. This removes the context for the scene, focusing our eye on the intimate spaces each building contains. In the reflected glass, we see dozens of curving lines, warped perspectives, and overlapping images that distort our relationship to the structure in question. Stahl forces us reexamine this urban environment, reminding us of all the people and spaces hovering just above our heads. This juxtaposition creates tension and depth in the frame, leading the eye from one hidden interior to the next, giving us a chance to notice details that we might otherwise miss.
